What is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure that reduces breast volume and weight by removing excess breast tissue and skin. The breasts are reshaped to sit in better proportion with the body, and the nipples are repositioned to a natural level where appropriate. For patients requiring treatment on both sides, this is referred to as bilateral breast reduction.
This operation aims to improve physical comfort and function. Any discussion of aesthetic change remains secondary to safety, proportion and long-term breast health.

The Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction surgery in London is performed under general anaesthetic in an accredited hospital setting. The operation typically takes 120 to 150 minutes. Most patients go home the same day, although an overnight stay may be recommended in some cases.
Consultation
Your consultation with Mr Khatib focuses on understanding your symptoms, medical history and expectations. A full clinical assessment is performed, including breast measurements and skin quality. Surgical options, scar patterns, recovery timelines and potential risks are discussed openly so you can make an informed decision.
Procedure
During surgery, carefully planned incisions allow excess tissue and skin to be removed. The breasts are reshaped, and the nipples are repositioned while preserving blood supply and sensation where possible. Mr Khatib uses modern techniques, including a drainless approach where suitable, to support recovery.
Recovery
- Hospital stay: Usually a day, but may need overnight admission in some cases.
- Time off work: Commonly 1 to 2 weeks, depending on your role.
- Exercise: Gentle activity at 2 weeks, moderate exercise at 6 weeks and return to full activity at around 3 months.
- Aftercare: One-week nurse wound check, with follow-up appointments at 6 weeks, 3 months, 1 year and annually thereafter.
- Support garment: A compression bra is worn for 6 weeks.
Clear aftercare instructions are provided, and ongoing review supports safe healing.
Results
Breast shape continues to settle over several months. Scars fade gradually and are positioned to be as discreet as possible. Long-term results depend on factors such as weight stability, skin quality and natural ageing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is breast reduction surgery safe?
Breast reduction surgery is considered a well-established procedure when performed by a suitably qualified specialist plastic surgeon in an accredited hospital. As with any surgery, there are risks, which are discussed in detail during consultation. Your overall health, breast anatomy and medical history are carefully assessed to support safety.
Is breast reduction surgery painful?
Most patients describe discomfort rather than severe pain following surgery. Pain is usually well controlled with prescribed medication and improves steadily over the first one to two weeks. Tightness and swelling are expected during early recovery. London consultant plastic surgeon Mr Khatib provides clear pain-management guidance as part of your aftercare plan.
Who is a suitable candidate for breast reduction surgery?
You may be suitable if large breasts cause physical symptoms such as neck, shoulder, or back discomfort, skin irritation, or difficulty exercising. Suitability also depends on overall health, breast development and realistic expectations. A clinical assessment is essential before any recommendation is made.
Will breast reduction surgery leave scars?
Breast reduction surgery does involve scars, as incisions are required to reshape the breasts and remove excess tissue. However, the skill and experience of the surgeon play an important role in planning incision placement and closure to help minimise their visibility, which can be seen in before and after photos. Scars are carefully positioned and typically soften and fade with time. Scar care and long-term healing are discussed during follow-up.
How much does breast reduction surgery cost in London?
Breast reduction surgery cost in London varies depending on surgical complexity, hospital fees and aftercare needs. A personalised quote is provided after your consultation, once your treatment plan is confirmed. This ensures transparency and clarity before proceeding.
